Unveiling the Magic of 'Mariposa Relámpago': A Behind-the-Scenes Journey

I am thrilled to share with you an extraordinary journey I embarked on recently. It was a voyage into the heart of a mesmerizing art exhibit, 'Mariposa Relámpago' by Guadalupe Maravilla, currently on display at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston and curated by Ruth Erickson. As the creator, alongside Kris Wilton, of the introduction video for this exhibit, I had the unique opportunity to delve deep into the essence of Maravilla's work and bring it to life through the lens of my camera. This project was a collaborative effort with Kris Wilton from the ICA, whose insights and guidance were invaluable.

The exhibit, 'Mariposa Relámpago' (Lightning Butterfly), is a testament to Maravilla's genius and his ability to weave together elements of mythology, personal history, and healing rituals into a transformative art experience. The exhibit is a part of Maravilla's Disease Thrower series, which draws from his personal experience as an immigrant and cancer survivor, and his exploration of indigenous healing practices.

The centerpiece of the exhibit is a large-scale, walk-through sculpture, a 'healing machine' that invites visitors to engage with the artwork in a deeply personal way. The sculpture is adorned with a multitude of elements, including hand-blown glass, sound elements, and a variety of objects that Maravilla has collected over the years. Each element is imbued with a story, a memory, a piece of the artist's journey.

Creating the introduction video for this exhibit was a journey in itself. I had the privilege of capturing the intricate details of Maravilla's work, the thoughtfully placed objects, the play of light and shadow, the dance of colors, and the symphony of sounds. I aimed to create a visual narrative that would complement Maravilla's artistry and provide viewers with a glimpse into the magic of 'Mariposa Relámpago'.

The video, which you can view here, is a testament to the power of art to heal, to transform, and to inspire. It is a celebration of Maravilla's vision and his unique approach to art-making.

As I navigated through the exhibit, camera in hand, I was struck by the profound impact of Maravilla's work. It is not just an exhibit; it is an immersive experience that invites reflection, introspection and a deeper understanding of the human condition. It is a testament to the power of art to heal, to transform, and to inspire.

I hope that through my video, you too can experience a piece of the magic that is 'Mariposa Relámpago'. I invite you to explore the exhibit, to engage with the artwork, and to embark on your own journey of discovery and transformation.

The Exhibit is open May 25 – Sep 4, 2023 at the ICA Watershed in East Boston.
